Synopsis

Shintarou Jagasaki is an average neighborhood police officer who hates his job and ordinary life. Though he acts goofy around others and plans to marry his girlfriend in the near future, Shintarou secretly fantasizes about shooting those who annoy him with a gun—much like his hero, the town's eggplant mascot, does.

The daily monotony Shintarou hates so much is interrupted when he witnesses a gruesome murder committed by a man with the face of a monster. When the creature kills his partner, Shintarou's mind is filled with the ways he has wasted his whole life. But as he accepts his impending death, he unwillingly fires a deadly projectile from the top of his fingers at the attacker.

With his arm now permanently coated in a mysterious material, Shintarou is told by a spectating owl that the now dead monster was once human. He was affected by a "Mad Xenopus," a frog-like creature that takes control of its host and changes its physical body. Shintarou initially ignores the creatures' existence. However, after one of them takes control of his soon-to-be wife, he decides to fight and eradicate the former humans to survive.

TL;DR - Edgelords rejoice, this manga a Head-empty Horror-fest, Sci-fi Shoot-em-up, Fan-service Fever dream from start to climax! er.. i mean Finish.

Jagaaaaaan is weird, and it's hard to tell whether it's trying to be a dark story similar to Ajin or Chainsaw Man, or whether it's trying to be something else. I think this is the how the authors felt as well, as there are many indications early on for setting up plots and characters that just never seem to go anywhere or fizzle out a bit (or a lot). There is still plenty to enjoy here.

The opening chapters do a great job of establishing ... an unconventional main character that seems like he will have interesting character development, and he does, but it doesn't quite feel like it was earned or really made any logical sense. I actually had to go back a couple times and look at the beginning chapters to make sure this is the same character and the same artist drawing him. While I could enjoy a main character that switches personalities for the sake of making fun of mainstream media which does this all the time, this manga suffers from the sin of taking itself a bit to seriously, especially considering the events and the premise of the story. There are times where this manga needs to give a wink or a nod to the reader that these characters are NOT acting normal and we should NOT take them seriously, but it doesn't do that, and the result can feel confusing at best and downright endorsing despicable and disgusting acts of violence at the worst.

It should be noted that there's A LOT of "adult" content in this manga, to the point of feeling like a straight up H doujinshi. The way it treats the scenes and presents them can also be hugely problematic. Female characters simply do not exist in this manga outside of being an object of desire or a tragic/abusive mother/daughter figure for a male character to draw motivation from. Some people might not care about that, or take a message away that these are bad things, but undoubtedly some will go away thinking not only is nothing wrong with this, but may even be envious of some of the most evil characters ever penned to manga which I find disturbing to say the least.

On the plus sides I find the characters to be highly entertaining for the most part, the art is very good and reminds me of I Am a Hero, the plot is quite simply good enough for what it needs to be, there are a decent number of humorous moments, and the action scenes really shine and carry the series. Unfortunately it suffers from pacing issues, and while it subverts many tropes it also falls pray to just as many and doesn't seem very aware of this fact all the way until the completely corny and unearned ending, that even sets up a potential sequel in the most cliché way possible. Worth checking out for sure, but you may not finish it and that's okay.

Mixed Feelings

tl;dr: A manga that starts off great and pretty unique but that slowly abandons most of what made it great for something much more generic.

This manga is about Shintarou Jagasaki, a low-level police officer that is incredibly tired of the mundane and pointless life he seems to be living and sees no way out of. His ordinary life is shattered when a bunch of mysterious frogs drop from the sky and start going inside people, turning them into fractured humans. When they become overemotional, fractured humans gain superhuman powers centered around their innermost desires. For most fractured humans, this results in a complete loss of ... control, turning them into monsters. However, some are able to retain their rationality, and are able to channel their desires to fight back against the fully fractured. Jagasaki becomes one such fractured human warrior, gaining the ability to turn his hand into a variety of different firearms, and taking on the name Jagaaaaaaan.

This manga starts off really great, with the first third overall having really good writing. There’s a good amount of action, but there’s just as much of a focus on why fractured humans are the way they are. How the desires manifest as different powers is interesting and how fractured human warriors tap into these desires is pretty unique and quite interesting. There are of course the ones that have very unorthodox desires, but the writing also handles the ones with really plain desires pretty well by fitting them into the overarching narrative in pretty interesting ways. Jagasaki especially is interesting in that his original desire was simply to escape his old boring life. As such, he’s often struggling to find new things to latch onto in order to give him the desires necessary to use his powers effectively. It’s a journey of self discovery in a sense, but the emphasis on desires gives it a pretty different feel.

Things start to decline after the first third, though I’d say they’re still good until around the half way point. It starts to feel really directionless and scattershot. There’s a lot of plot elements that in the end feel completely pointless as they went nowhere. The focus on desires declines, and in its place there’s a lot of exploration of incredibly shallow and generic morality and social dynamics, which is nowhere near as interesting or insightful. There’s also a much larger emphasis on action, but less of an emphasis on the desires that give birth to the various powers. The action itself was never handled all that well, but rather the context is what made it good, so as a result the action is overall worse.

There’s also a slow change in tone that really doesn’t work out to well. The manga has a level of juvenile edginess to it throughout, but for a lot of the manga it feels like it isn’t taking itself too seriously so it’s actually pretty amusing. This is because there’s a sense of whimsy to everything with exaggerated actions, expressions, and the way characters and their thought processes are portrayed in general. That’s not to say it doesn’t take itself seriously at all, as this definitely isn’t a comedy manga, but it felt like there was an undercurrent of dark humor to everything. However, towards the later stages of the manga it becomes much angstier and not as fun which makes it far less enjoyable. The ending and epilogue are pretty solid, but they felt somewhat half assed so I can’t say I was entirely satisfied with them.

The art I would also say becomes less appealing as the manga progresses. For the first half or so, in fitting with the more whimsical tone, the art too is pretty exaggerated and used in pretty fun ways. This occurs far less in the second half where the art overall is much grungier and more typical of action horror. I feel the designs introduced early on were also generally much better than the ones introduced later on.

Just pathetic. Imagine if you mixed a good premise with inspiration from Parasite and Gantz and simply ruined it because you are terrible at writing narratives and characters, and yet you leave your sick fetishes so visible in the story that it makes anyone embarrassed to read it. I read all those 163 chapters thinking they could still have a decent ending, but no. Just disappointing and a waste of time. I could still say the art style is good, but it feels lazy in the pacing of the series. Also, there's a character in the beginning of the story that makes everything worse, and ...
